CASE STUDY
Kindred Hospital
Restoring comfort and HVAC efficiency for a long-term acute care hospital in San Antonio, TX.
Kindred Hospital in San Antonio is a four-story medical treatment facility equipped with a chilled water central plant and five rooftop air handlers. Over time, the facility experienced major issues with temperature control and energy efficiency due to deteriorating duct insulation.

The Challenge
Approximately 5,000 linear feet of rooftop ductwork had external insulation that had failed from prolonged exposure to the elements. The damaged insulation was falling off and severely degraded, leading to a 14°F temperature loss in the supply air ducts. This made it difficult to maintain indoor temperatures during peak cooling times, impacting patient comfort, system performance, and HVAC efficiency.
The Solution
Coat Zone® dealer, Energy Performance Solutions, developed a targeted restoration strategy:
- ThermalBlock™ Coating: The cleaned ducts were then coated with ThermalBlock™, creating a sealed, weather-resistant barrier that insulates and protects without traditional cladding..
- Insulation Removal & Surface Prep: All failed insulation was removed, and the duct surfaces were thoroughly cleaned.
The Impact
- Temperature Loss Reduced from 14°F to 3°F: The restored ductwork dramatically improved system efficiency and performance.
- Improved Comfort: Kindred can now maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the facility, even during peak cooling demand.
- Month-Over-Month Energy Savings: The reduction in air leakage and heat gain has translated to ongoing energy cost savings.
- Extended Equipment Life: By reducing system strain during extreme conditions, Kindred is also extending the life of its HVAC infrastructure and improving overall patient comfort.

Before
Prior to treatment, insulation had degraded due to constant exposure to the elements, resulting in severe energy loss and reduced HVAC efficiency and performance.

After
Rooftop ductwork restored and protected with ThermalBlock™—fully sealed, weather-resistant, and energy-efficient.
